7 Mistakes You Might Be Making on Your Website (and How to Fix Them!)
Hey there, friend! Let’s talk websites. Whether you’re tweaking your existing one or starting from scratch, your website is your corner of the internet—your digital handshake with dream clients. But sometimes, a few sneaky mistakes can hold it back from being the superstar it’s meant to be.
No worries, though! I’ve got your back with this fun, easy-to-follow guide to help you spot those pesky mistakes and fix them. Think of this as us having coffee together, chatting about how to make your website shine.
Mistake #1: Your Copy Sounds… Meh
If your website doesn’t sound like you, we’ve got a problem. Are you using stiff, corporate-speak instead of letting your personality shine? Your clients want to connect with YOU, not a robot!
Let’s fix your copy:
Write like you’re talking to your favorite client
Swap out formal phrases for ones that feel warm and conversational.
Use words your audience actually uses—ditch the jargon.
Example: instead of “when you’re ready to book, a 25% retainer fee is required to save your spot”
try: “If we hit it off (you like pina coladas, dogs, dad jokes? No further questions) a 25% retainer fee saves your date!”
Mistake #2: You Forgot About SEO
If your site isn’t optimized for search engines, it’s like throwing a fabulous party and not sending out invitations.
Let’s fix your SEO:
Include keywords your dream clients are searching for (like “[Your Location] brand photographer” or “family-friendly baker”).
Add location info to your homepage, footer, and contact page (Google loves this!).
Write blog posts that answer your audience’s questions—they’re an SEO goldmine. (hehe hello from my own personal SEO goldmine!!!)
If your photo files are still named “IMG_1234.jpg,” we need to talk. This is an easy SEO win you might be missing! Rename your images before uploading them. Instead of “IMG_1234,” try “southwest-michigan-brand-photographer.jpg.”
Compress your images so your site loads faster (your visitors will also thank you!).
Mistake #3: No Clear Call to Action (CTA)
Your dream client has landed on your site. Yay! But… what do they do next? If your website doesn’t clearly guide them, they’ll bounce faster than a rubber ball.
Let’s fix your CTA:
Make sure there is a clear CTA front and center on your homepage!! (View my homepage for an example).
Add buttons and prompts like “Book Your Session,” “Let’s Work Together,” or “Get Your Freebie.”
Make your CTA buttons bold, colorful, and impossible to miss.
Mistake #4: Hiding Your Face
People connect with people. If your website doesn’t show your face, you’re missing out on building trust.
Let’s add you into your brand:
Add a professional (but friendly!) photo of yourself to your About page.
Infuse your personality, share your story on your About page but also make sure your whole website feels like you.
Don’t have any professional images to share of yourself? I know just the girl.. ;)
Mistake #5: No Location Mentions
If I can’t find out where you are located by hopping onto your site, neither can your clients! Make sure you are incorporating your location in several different spots on your website!
including your location:
Add your city and state in your website copy, footer, and about section.
I would also try to add this to headers on a few different pages!
Example: Southwest Michigan Brand Photographer
Mistake #6: Ignoring Mobile Users
Fun fact: Most people are scrolling your site on their phone. If it doesn’t look amazing on mobile, they’re outta there.
Check your site on your phone and make sure everything looks good.
Pay extra attention to font size, button placement, and load times.
Send your website to your spouse, friends, family.. have them all take a look around and make sure it loads well and functions correctly on their phones! It never ever hurts to have extra eyes on something you have worked so hard on.
Mistake #7: Forgetting to Update Your Site
If your last blog post was from three years ago or your pricing is outdated, it’s time for a refresh.
Schedule quarterly website updates to keep everything fresh and accurate.
Update your portfolio, testimonials and images as you complete new projects!
“According to most research, the average person spends around 2-3 minutes on a website, with the first 10-20 seconds being crucial for deciding whether to stay or leave; meaning a website needs to quickly capture a visitor's attention to keep them engaged.”
That’s it! Fixing these little mistakes can make a huge difference in how your website performs and how your dream clients feel when they land there. Now, grab that coffee, block off a little time, and start making those updates! Your website—and your future clients—will thank you. Want to keep the momentum going?
